Golden Tide Dumped 16-6 By DuBois Central Catholic

DUBOIS  – For two innings the Curwensville Area High School baseball team held its own against DuBois Central Catholic.  However, the Cardinals erupted in the third and fourth innings to close the game with a 16-6 victory on Friday.

The Tide bats jumped out early to post a lead in the first inning on three straight hits after the first out.  Catcher Kyle Bloom started the offense with a single.  Sophomore Jake Stiles followed with a base hit, and Jason Bloom drove home the first run with a double.  The visitors went up by a 2-0 count as Kyle Johns reached on an error and Stiles raced home.

DCC rallied in the bottom of the frame to tie the score in similar fashion.  A single by Nick Sczerba and a double by Alex Allender plated the first run, and after the second out, a Curwensville error plated Allender for a 2-2 count.

Curwensville took back the lead in the second as Brett Gardner led off with a walk.  Hunter McCracken sacrificed Gardner to second and Jordan Russell cleaned up the RBI with  a single.  Again the hosts copied their guests as a walk and a single knotted the score at 3-3 in the bottom of the second.

From that point the Cardinals exploded for 10 hits and 13 runs through the third and fourth innings to take control of the game.  Gardner started the game on the mound for the Golden Tide and was tagged for 10 runs on six hits while striking out one and walking three batters.

The Tide put up three runs in the fifth, but failed to extend the game as the 10-run rule came into play.  Russell and Jason Bloom had hits in the inning to help the cause.

Jason Bloom was the only Black and Gold member to have  two hits on the day.  For the Cardinals, Sczerba and Jake Miknis each had three hits including a double.  The pitching duo of Allender and Ryan Anderson slapped out two hits each as all but one starter collected at least one hit.

Curwensville will be back in action Saturday at Johnsonburg to make up the season opener.  The Tide fell to Johnsonburg  5-3 at home earlier this week.
