I-80 Bridge Work to Re-start Wednesday near Bellefonte

BELLEFONTE – Interstate 80 bridge preservation work in Centre County will re-start Wednesday.

PennDOT’s work zone encompasses the eastbound and westbound bridges that span Route 26 at the Bellefonte/161 interchange and at the bridges spanning Route 1010 (Hubler Ridge Road) at mile-marker 165.

This month-long work is a continuation of preservation work on six bridges that began in the summer of 2012. The other two bridges are located over Township Road 476 and are not scheduled for further work at this time. Three of the six bridges had been declared structurally deficient.

Once the work is finished in mid-May, those bridges will be removed from the structurally deficient list. Preserving and repairing all six bridges also extends the serviceable life of each bridge for decades.

No lane restrictions will be necessary this week along the mainline of I-80. Drivers will find restrictions on Route 26 and Route 1010 as follows:

On state Route 26, drivers may encounter short-term, daylight lane closures near the I-80 bridges. Depending on traffic volumes and time of day, drivers may wish to choose alternate routes to avoid delays. Flaggers will control an alternating traffic pattern through the area and drivers need to remain alert for changing conditions.

On SR 1010 (Hubler Ridge Road), drivers will encounter an alternating traffic pattern. That pattern may be controlled by roadway flaggers or by a stop condition at either end of the work zone. Drivers will need to remain alert for changing conditions through this zone.

Work over the next month will include epoxy painting of the existing concrete on the pier columns, caps, and fascia beams. HRI Inc. of State College is the contractor on this $3.4 million project. PennDOT will issue updates on this work as necessary.
