2009 Spikes pitcher Phil Irwin became the 17th former State College player to reach the major leagues when he took the mound as the starting pitcher for the Pittsburgh Pirates Sunday afternoon against Cincinnati. The right-hander pitched for the Spikes in 2009 after being selected by Pittsburgh in the 21st round of that year’s MLB Draft out of the University of Mississippi.
