The Clearfield Center for Active Living, in partnership with the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), is offering area individuals 50 and older the opportunity to take the AARP Driver Safety course.
The classroom course was developed by AARP to help drivers remain safe on today’s roads while providing the bonus of a three-year discount on the course graduates’ car insurance.
Both the Original and the Refresher courses will be offered at the Clearfield Center this spring. Preregistration is required.
On April 24, the Driver Safety Refresher Course will be available to those whose previous training has passed the three year mark. The original, eight-hour class will be taken in two sessions: Monday and Tuesday, May 13-14. All classes will run from 12:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.
The class is open to all drivers over 50 with the cost for non-AARP members at $14 while AARP members pay a discounted price of $12. Checks are to be made payable to AARP and are to be given to the instructor on the first day of class.
Vouchers from those with AARP’s Drive Safe Membership will be accepted. Class size is limited and the required registration is taken on a first-come, first-served basis, so early sign-up is suggested.

All automobile insurance companies conducting business in Pennsylvania are required to provide a premium discount to graduates of the Driver Safety Program who are 55 years of age and older. Couples, who both have a driver’s license, are each required to be certified in the program in order to be eligible for the discount. Although geared to drivers 50 and over, the class is open to all ages, and AARP membership is not a requirement.
The instruction is designed to meet the specific needs of older drivers and covers age-related physical changes, declining perceptual skills, rules of the road, local driving problems, and license renewal requirements. RSVP volunteer instructors trained by AARP will conduct the courses, which are presented through a combination of video presentations and group discussion.
