Route 550 Work to Re-start near Bellefonte

STATE COLLEGE – A project to improve traffic flow and provide a smoother ride quality on Route 550 will re-start near Bellefonte. On Monday, crews will begin to work on water and sewer lines to the right of the eastbound lane. The overall project stretches from PennDOT’s Centre County Maintenance building to the Route 26/220 intersection.

In the coming weeks, crews will also be working to place drainage pipes and inlets, patching concrete pavement, and widening the roadway. Two lanes of traffic will be maintained during construction operations but travel delays should be expected during work hours. Drivers need to be alert for slowed or stopped traffic and workers performing duties near and adjacent to the roadway.

Project work will stretch through the 2013 construction season. Overall work will include roadway reconstruction, roadway widening, installation of a left turn lane, drainage improvements, sewer and water line relocation, sidewalk improvements, paving and miscellaneous items.

HRI Inc. of State College is the contractor for this $2.9 million project. All work is weather and schedule dependent. PennDOT reminds motorists to remain alert for bicyclists using the highway, to use caution when driving near bicyclists and to share the road.

Drivers are reminded to obey posted speed limits, proceed through work zones with caution, and always buckle up.
