MVCEF Plans Race, Receives Donations

HOUTZDALE – The Moshannon Valley Community Education Foundation Alumni Association and the Moshannon Valley Junior-Senior High School Spanish Club will be holding a joint 5K (3.1 miles) walk/run and 10K (6.2 miles) race on May 18.

Walkers will begin at 9 a.m. at Palcher Park in Ramey. Fees for pre-registered 5K walkers are $15 and then $20 on race day. Runners will begin at 10 a.m. Fees for pre-registered runners are $20 and then $25 on race day.

Elementary students may race for free with a paid adult per student. All fees are non-refundable and non-transferable and are considered to be a donation.

The course will consist of the streets of Ramey and the Houtzdale Line Rails to Trails. Participants should register 30 minutes prior to their race.  Age categories are 21 years and under, 22-39 years, 40-55 years and 56 years and older.  Cash rewards will be given to the overall top male and female finishers and top male and female racers in each age group.  Free T-shirts will be given to the first 100 registered.

Proceeds will be divided equally to support the cost of constructing the future “Alumni Honor Wall” at the Moshannon Valley Junior-Senior High School and for the Spanish Club’s upcoming trip to Puerto Rico.

Paper and electronic registration forms for the race, and bricks for the Alumni Honor Wall are available at www.mvcef.org. Bricks are $50, with a $2 service fee for online orders. Brick order forms will also be available at the race or by contacting Caryn Southern at 814-378-8715.

The MVCEF announced the following donation to its Scholarship Fund: $1,000 from the Houtzdale Moose Lodge 327.  Anyone who wishes to donate to the Scholarship Fund may contact Joseph Cervenak, chairman, at 814-378-7616.

The MVCEF announced the following donations to its CNC Plasma Cutting Equipment Fund: $1,000 from the Madera Moose Lodge 1172; $500 from the Houtzdale Moose Lodge 327; $500 matching funds from McClelland Welding LLC and Kruise Funeral Homes Inc.  Anyone wishing to donate to the CNC Plasma Cutting Equipment Fund, which benefits not only high school students at Moshannon Valley, but also employers who need trained individuals on this equipment may contact Debora Kruise, 814-378-5514.

MVCEF awarded grants for the purchase of 80 books for incoming kindergarten students; four mini grants to the Varsity and Spanish Clubs, the third grade and the music department; transportation for 56 chemistry students to visit Breazeale Nuclear Reactor; and for students to attend the Biotechnology Class to the Forensics Cottage.

The MVCEF is currently working on an alumni database. This database will be helpful for those who wish to find classmates and to organize a class reunion; to see what activities alumni may be interested in; the MVCEF’s Alumni Speaker Series; and to fundraise and to assist Robert Reed, chairman of the 50th Anniversary Celebration of the Moshannon Valley School District.

Andrea Walstrom Crossett will be the third speaker in the MVCEF Alumni Speaker Series. Crossett is a landscape architect with Dewberry of Fairfax, VA and is the designer of the Alumni Honor Wall. Crossett will be speaking to students April 19.

Elsie Harchak and Debbie Kruise will be attending the Pennsylvania Consortium of Education Foundation’s “Make the Ask” program at the Mars High School, Mars, on March 28. Harchak and Kruise will learn how the foundation can be approved and participate in the Pennsylvania Tax Credit (EITC) program.

The next MVCEF meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. May 15 at the Hiller Family Memorial Library, Houtzdale.
