VFW Helps with Costs of Tasers for Sheriff’s Dept.

CLEARFIELD – Clearfield’s Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) is helping defray the costs of purchasing tasers for the Clearfield County Sheriff’s Department. John Rowles, on behalf of the VFW, announced they were making a donation of $807 at Tuesday’s Clearfield County Commissioners meeting.

Commissioner Chairperson Joan Robinson-McMillen said the sheriff’s department had requested more tasers, which wasn’t included in the county’s budget. She said there was an opportunity to purchase previously-owned tasers that were in very good shape from another municipality.

She said they were able to financially structure a deal that was advantageous to both the county and the other municipality. She said the county was still short in its budget, which then prompted Deputy Sheriff George DeHaven to reach out to the VFW.

“Now, we’re receiving a very generous donation to keep the courts safe and to protect our deputies when they’re out serving warrants and in harm’s way,” said Robinson-McMillen. She said the tasers are going to give deputies a less intrusive means than a firearm.

DeHaven thanked Rowles on behalf of the sheriff’s department and said this will do them a great service. DeHaven said deputies will complete the required training before carrying and using the tasers.

“We not only appreciate what you did at your time of service, but what you continue to do now as veterans to serve us,” said Robinson-McMillen.
