Obituary Notice: Robina M. Maines

Robina M. Maines, 91, of Greenfield Township, Erie County, died Thursday, March 21, 2013 at Pleasant Ridge Manor-East, Erie following a lengthy illness. She was born Aug. 1, 1921 in Nottingham, England, a daughter of the late William and Irene Herring.

She immigrated to the United States in 1946 and settled in Mineral Springs. She had resided in the Erie area for more than 50 years and had lived on the family farm in Greenfield Township since 1959.

During World War II, she served in the Women’s Royal Voluntary Aid Detachment. It was in England during this time, where she met and wedded her late husband, Bruce E. Maines, who was then a Private in the U.S. Air Corps.

She had been employed as a letter carrier for a number of years by the U.S. Postal Service. She had the distinction of being the first female carrier in the city of Erie. Prior to that, she had been employed by several businesses including the former Pure Truck Stop in North East Township. She had attended the Greenfield Baptist Church and was an avid reader, as well as enjoying camping and rose gardening.

She is survived by five children, Beverly I. McCuster and William D. Maines , both of Mineral Springs, Bruce A. Maines of Canadohta Lake, Patrick B. Maines and his wife, Brenda K. of Erie and David A. Maines of North East; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mavis of Nottingham, England.

In addition to her husband, she was also preceded in death by a daughter, Sandra Lee Maines; two sons, Russell Scott and Calvin Grant Maines; and a sister, Peggy Roberts.

Friends will be received from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Kevin A. Beardsley Funeral Home, Clearfield.  Funeral services and burial will be held at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the charity of one’s choice.
