HARRISBURG – The House Commerce Committee yesterday unanimously passed House Bill 927, legislation authored by state Rep. Tommy Sankey (R-Clearfield) which would re-enact a program that addresses Pennsylvania’s unemployment picture.

“There is no such thing as a jobless recovery, so we need to get people back to work,” said Sankey. “This legislation would resurrect a program that was allowed to lapse and empower Pennsylvanians with the skills they need to return to the working world.”

House Bill 927 restores the Community Services Block Grant Program, which expired on Dec.  31, 2011. The program allows community action agencies to provide low-income individuals with the skills and support necessary for acquiring and sustaining employment.

“The goal of these agencies is to fight poverty through self-sufficiency, using the federally-funded Community Services Block Grant,” Sankey added.  “They are local private and public non-profit organizations that can provide job training, transportation and education, as well as advice on nutrition and drug and alcohol counseling.”
