CLEARFIELD – Work to replace a structurally deficient bridge on Route 729 will get under way March 6. The bridge spans Muddy Run in the village of Beccaria in southern Clearfield County.
The current bridge is posted for 34-tons for single vehicles and 40-tons for combination vehicles. Replacing the superstructure of the current bridge will remove the posting, improve the structural integrity and riding surface of the bridge, and lengthen its useful life.
On March 6, PennDOT will close Route 729 in the area of the bridge and a detour will be in place for about two months. The official detour will use Routes 453 and 53. PennDOT expects to re-open the bridge by June.
Overall work includes superstructure replacement, reconstruction of roadway approaches, drainage improvements, and guide rail updates. The Beccaria Bridge was built in 1934 is 35 feet long, and carries average daily traffic of 550 vehicles.
All work is weather and schedule-dependent. This bridge work is part of a $1.3 million, three-bridge contract that began in 2012. Cottles Asphalt Maintenance Inc. of Everett of is the contractor for this work.
