John G. Bloom, 89, of Grampian died Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2013 at the Christ the King Manor, DuBois. He was born Dec. 19, 1923 in Croft, a son of the late Wilbur and Susannah (Flood) Bloom.

Mr. Bloom was employed as a plumber and pipe fitter and belonged to the United Association of Plumbers Union Local 520, having served as a steward.

He attended the Chestnut Grove United Methodist Church and was a charter member of the Grampian Fire Hall and a member of the Curwensville Free and Accepted Masons, Noble Lodge #480.

He also served as a member and past president of the Grampian Borough Council, a board member of the Grampian-Penn-Bloom Water Authority and was active with the Grampian Community Park Committee.

A veteran of the U.S. Army 60th Infantry 9th Division, Mr. Bloom was a scout during World War II. He served his active duty in Africa, Sicily, France, Belgium and Germany, where he was wounded and awarded the Purple Heart.

He is survived by three daughters, Nancy Buell and her husband, Bob of Curwensville, Jill Peterson and her husband, Dave of Rockton and Sally McFadden and her husband, Robert of Huntsville, AL; five grandchildren, Robert Buell, John and Alan Peterson, and Lacey and Brett McFadden; two great-grandchildren; a sister and a brother, Sara Cleaver of Grampian and Lynn L. Bloom and his wife, Margaret ‘Sis’ of Grampian; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley E. (Nesbit) Bloom on May 24, 2010 and whom he wed March 4, 1949 in Luthersburg; an infant daughter, Sharon Lee; and a brother, Hylan Bloom.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Chestnut Grove United Methodist Church, Grampian with the Rev. Emmett Anderson officiating. Burial will follow in the Chestnut Grove Cemetery, Grampian.

Military honors will be accorded at the cemetery by the members of the Clearfield American Legion and VFW Posts honor guard.

Friends will be received from 4 p.m. – 8 p.m. Friday at the Kevin A. Beardsley Funeral Home, Curwensville, and from 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. Saturday at the church.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Chestnut Grove Cemetery, 6084 Chestnut Grove Hwy., Grampian, PA 16838.
