James C. Matlack, 77, of Curwensville died Monday, Feb. 11, 2013 at his home surrounded by his family. He was born Nov. 11, 1935 in New Millport, a son of the late T. James and Vera (Wiley) Matlack.
Mr. Matlack retired from the Clearfield Area School District after 35 years of service. He was previously employed by Diamond T. Strippings Company and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. He was also a self-employed painter and served in the U.S. Army from 1956-1958.
He was a member of the Hepburnia United Methodist Church, where he served as a Sunday school teacher and a Certified Lay Speaker.
Mr. Matlack graduated from Clearfield High School in 1953, from Clarion University in 1961 and from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 1970.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy (Curry) Matlack, whom he married Nov. 24, 1960.
He is also survived by three children, James L. Matlack and his wife, Susan Pierce of Wilmington, DE, Jennifer Matlack Tubbs and her husband, Randy of Hepburnia and Shelly Matlack Ferlemann and her husband, Paul of Poquoson, VA; five grandchildren, Alexa Pierce-Matlack, Chantel P. and Chloe A. Tubbs and Chad T. and Cole F. Ferlemann; and a sister-in-law, Elaine D. Matlack of New Millport.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Virginia McNamara; a brother, Harry Matlack; and a brother-in-law, Roger McNamara.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Kevin A. Beardsley Funeral Home, Curwensville, with the Rev. Emmett Anderson officiating. Burial will follow in the Friends Cemetery, Grampian.
Friends will be received from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. Friday and from 10 a.m. until the hour of services Saturday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Hepburnia United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, PO Box G, Grampian; the Curwensville Public Library, 601 Beech St., Curwensville; or the Nathaniel D. Yingling Cancer Center, 815 Doctor’s Dr., Clearfield.
