Brockway Defeats Golden Tide Roundballers, 63-39

CURWENSVILLE — It was pretty much the same season long story for the Curwensville Golden Tide boys basketball team Saturday afternoon.

Have one really bad quarter and come up saddled with another loss.

The Brockway Rovers won for the 14th time this season in a make-up game at Patton Hall, 63-39, over the Tide. All in part to a third quarter when the Rovers outscored their hosts, 17-4.

Curwensville battled back and forth with the Rovers in the first eight minutes of action and trailed only by two at the end of one, 11-9.  Sophomore Trey Rauckhorst of the Tide put his team in front, 7-5, with 3:44 left in the opening act showing that Curwensville could stay with its visitors.

The Tide would take a four point lead over the Rovers early in the second, 15-11, as they came out and scored the first six points on buckets by Austin Jacobson,  Tanner Elensky and Brett Gardner.

Then the Rovers kicked into high gear as they went on a 16-5 run to end the half with a seven point lead, 27-20.

Brockway hit three straight three-pointers in the second, one by Jake Perrin, and back-to back treys by Cody Jose to start to pull away.

Jose, a junior reserve, scored eight second quarter points for Brockway to lead the charge.

Then came that “one” quarter, that one bad quarter that has haunted the Golden Tide this year.

This time it was the third eight minutes as Brockway took charge with a 17-4 third period to bolt to a 20 point lead, 44-24, with only eight minutes left.

No come back was in the books on the afternoon for the Tide, as they slipped to 4-15 on the 2012-13 campaign.

Tanner Elensky had 10 for Curwensville, while Clay Anderson lead the Rovers with 12, followed by 10 from Jose.

Golden Tide head coach Shane Pentz said afterwards, “Our offense just left us in the third quarter.  We just couldn’t put the ball in the basket.”

Then Pentz continued, saying, “Today was not indicative of our season.  We have played in 10 close games this season, where we have had leads in most of them, but we found a way to lose nine of those 10 games. And, obviously, this wasn’t one of those close games.”

Brockway swept the two game season series over Curwensville, having defeated the Tide in mid-December, 45-32, on the Rovers’ home floor.

The junior varsity contest was won by the Golden Tide, 41-30, over the Rovers.

Curwensville entertains Clearfield on Monday night, with the JV game beginning at 6 pm and the varsity to immediately follow.  The Bison beat the Tide in the first game of the year, at Clearfield, 42-37.
