HYDE – The Curwensville wrestling team salvaged one win out of the fifth annual Bison Duals Saturday by slipping past Valley 39-34 in the ninth-place match in Clearfield Area High School’s Weiss Gym.
A fall by Sam Bressler at 113 pounds, a decision by Brandon Sass at 138 and five forfeits against the District 7 team averted a shutout for the Golden Tide, which couldn’t have drawn a much tougher assignment in Pool A matches.
The first three opponents — Port Allegany, General McLane, Peters Township — checked into the event with spotless records. And Sharpsville had posted 10 wins.
Making it all the more difficult for the Golden Tide was the absence of regulars Tyler Mays (120), Trey McKenzie (145), Ricky Magnuson (220) and Brad Stubbs (285).
Jake Lancaster’s pin at 126, Zach Tibbens’ major decision at 160 and Nate Wriglesworth’s decision at 170 accounted for Curwensville’s points in a 63-13 loss to Port Allegany, the top team in District 9’s Northern Tier.
The undermanned Golden Tide was outclassed by the two Class AAA squads, blanked 70-0 by General McLane of District 10 and 70-6 to Peters Township of District 7.
Bressler’s second of three falls during the day prevented a second shutout.
Curwensville led most of the way in its fourth meet after bantams Jake Koptchak (106) and Bressler provided a 9-0 start with a decision and a fall, respectively.
Lancaster registered a fall, Sass earned a technical fall and Dakota Royer (152) logged a major decision to keep the Golden Tide in front.
After Sharpsville drew even at 24-24, Wriglesworth’s forfeit win and Austin Pollick’s decision put Curwensville ahead again, but two forfeits around a fall gave Sharpsville a 42-33 win.
General McLane (12-0) defeated West Branch (19-2) in the title match, 37-24.
Peters Township (11-1) claimed third place with a 29-27 squeaker over defending champion Pleasant Valley (14-4).
PA (12-3) dropped the fifth-place match, 38-33, to Montoursville (11-5), and Sharpsville lost the seventh-place match, 50-27, to Clearfield (4-6).
The schedule doesn’t get any easier for Curwensville (6-9).
The Golden Tide will be at home Thursday against Brookville (16-2), ranked No. 5 in Off the Mat’s Class AA state rankings last week, and then hits the road to compete in the 30th Fred Bell Memorial Tournament at Grove City Friday and Saturday.
