Joyner to remain as athletic director for rest of Erickson’s term

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Penn State announced today (Jan. 21) that President Rodney Erickson has named David M. Joyner as director of Intercollegiate Athletics through the remainder of Erickson’s term of office, at which time a national search will be conducted.

"I have confidence in Dr. Joyner and want him to continue as part of my leadership team while I am president," Erickson said.

Joyner received his bachelor’s degree in science from Penn State in 1972 and his medical doctorate from Penn State’s College of Medicine in 1976. Following residencies in general and orthopedic surgery at The Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and a brief stint in the World Football League, Joyner began a medical career with a sports medicine emphasis. Joyner is known internationally for his extensive experience with the U.S. Olympic Committee, including head U.S. Team physician for the 1992 Olympic Winter Games.

Joyner was named acting athletic director in November 2011 to replace Tim Curley, who was on administrative leave following allegations against former retired assistant coach Jerry Sandusky. The University notified Curley in September that his contract would not be renewed beyond its June 30, 2013, expiration date. Curley elected to retire from the position late last year.
