Tyrone Hospital & Tyrone Area School District Co-sponsor Program
TYRONE – Vanessa Fazio, Ph.D. and her associates, an internationally-known team of sports concussion experts from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery’s Sports Concussion Program will provide free “Concussion Symposiums” in Tyrone.
The symposiums, co-sponsored by Tyrone Hospital and the Tyrone Area School District, will be held from 2 p.m. – 5 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13 at the Tyrone Area School District Campus.
Fazio is part of the internationally-known team studying the neurocognitive effects of sports-related concussion. Fazio is a specialist in psychology with a sub-specialty in neuropsychology. She is an assistant professor of orthopaedic surgery at the University of Pittsburgh.
Fazio and her team have worked to develop better methods of evaluation to determine when it is safe for an athlete to return to sports. Prominent professional athletes from the Pittsburgh area, such as Sydney Crosby, Ben Rothlesberger and many other college and professional athletes have been treated in this program.
The goals of the Concussion Symposium are:
- Provide background information regarding concussion management.
- Present data pertaining to outcomes and risk factors associated with sports concussion.
- Review treatment/rehabilitation protocols.
- Review the utility of ImPACT as a tool for effective concussion management.
- Provide foundation concussion management.
Fazio’s presentation will begin at 2 p.m. in the Tyrone Middle School LGI Room, and will end by 5 p.m. Fazio’s presentation will be targeted toward physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists and physical therapists. Those who attend the program may obtain CME and Continuing Education credits.
A presentation from one of Fazio’s associates will be presented simultaneously to Coaches, Athletic Trainers, Athletic Directors, youth coaches and parents in the Tyrone Area Elementary School’s LGI Room, also located on the Tyrone Area School District Campus.
This Concussion Symposium is being provided free of charge by Tyrone Hospital in cooperation with the Tyrone Area School District as part of Tyrone Hospital’s new health and wellness initiative.
