Swimming and diving’s Ryan named Big Ten Freshman of the Week

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — After a stellar performance against Villanova this past weekend, Penn State swimming and diving’s Shane Ryan (Havertown, Pa.) has been named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday. This is the first weekly award of Ryan’s collegiate career.

Competing against the Wildcats, Ryan placed first in all of his events to lead four Penn State sweeps. The rookie won the 50-yard free with a time of 20.46 seconds before recording a season best of 45.00 seconds in the 100-yard free. Swimming the freestyle leg of the 200-yard medley relay, Ryan helped the Nittany Lions achieve an event-winning time of  1:29.54. He then went on to lead his 200-yard free relay team to a victory with a time of 1:24.24.

Ryan and the Lions return to action on Friday, Nov. 16 at 5 p.m. when the squad travels to Indiana for a weekend tri-meet against the Hoosiers and Virginia.
