HIGHLAND TOWNSHIP – No injuries were reported after a truck-tractor caught fire at 8:45 a.m. Friday on state Route 66 south of Nansen in Highland Township, according to the Ridgway-based state police.
The Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshal and the Highland Township Fire Department investigated the origin and cause of a fire that destroyed a 2001 Peterbilt truck-tractor. The truck-tractor had stopped on SR 66 northbound while waiting for clearance to proceed through a construction zone.
At some point, a fire ignited in the engine compartment of the truck and quickly spread throughout the cab. The cause of the fire was electrical in nature, state police said. No injuries were reported; damage was estimated at $100,000.
The truck-tractor was connected to a tank trailer, which was loaded with wax. The fire was contained to the truck-tractor, and the trailer sustained minimal heat damage. Its load wasn’t damaged as a result of the fire.
The Highland Township Police Department was assisted at the scene by the Kane, Johnsonburg and Ridgway fire departments. SR 66 was closed for approximately one hour before being opened to controlled, one-lane traffic.
