Robert R. Shafer Sr., 92, of Curwensville died Saturday, Nov. 3, 2012 at the Clearfield Hospital. He was born April 5, 1920, a son of the late George M. and Anna I. (Ross) Shafer.

Mr. Shafer retired from Howe’s Leather Company, Curwensville, in 1981 after more than 40 years of employment. He had also been employed at Lezzer’s Lumber Co., Curwensville and the Power Construction Line, Erie.

Mr. Shafer was a gifted carpenter, having built the last two houses in which he lived. He also was an avid hunter and tended a lush garden that yielded plentiful produce.

Mr. Shafer was a life member and volunteer fireman with the Rescue Hose and Ladder Co., Curwensville. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served during World War II.

He is survived by four children, Robert Shafer Jr. of Curwensville; Susan Seaburn of Detroit, MI; Janice O’Dell-Winter and her husband, Richard of Linden; and Karen Shafer of DuBois.

Also surviving are seven grandchildren, Michael O’Dell, Gregory Seaburn, Beth Taggart, Dawn Seaburn, David Berouty, Grace Steenson and Brian VanBlargan; several great-grandchildren and great great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ruth Bressler of Curwensville and Betty Flynn of Bath, NY; a brother, Ray Shafer and his wife, Barbara of Niagara Falls, NY; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, L. Mae (Faulkner) Shafer on April 24, 2005 and whom he wed April 26, 1941 at The Presbyterian Church, Clearfield.

He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Shirley Ann Medford; two grandsons, Rodney Barrett and Clifford VanBlargan; four sisters, Hazel Bunnell, Helen Rowles, Margaret Stackpole and Jean Seger; four brothers, Ira, Charles, Harold and Donald; and a half brother, James (Shafer) Hunter.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Kevin A. Beardsley Funeral Home, Curwensville, with the Rev. Chuck Taber officiating. Burial will follow in the Crown Crest Memorial Park, Hyde.

Friends will be received from 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. Tuesday and from 10 a.m. until the hour of services Wednesday at the funeral home.
