Guardian Home & Community Services Encourages Families to Discuss Aging-related Decisions

BROCKWAY – Guardian Home & Community Services Inc. is conducting a community-wide campaign to encourage families to discuss what their wishes are as they age. In recognition of November as Homecare and Hospice Month, Guardian has teamed up with the Pennsylvania Homecare Association to offer a multimedia resource for families to use as a guide to begin the conversation and to provide resources to families already facing these issues.

A brief documentary chronicles the stories of three Pennsylvania families grappling with common issues that so many face as they care for aging parents, try to navigate the healthcare system and find the resources necessary to keep loved ones at home. A companion guidebook provides information about all of the services and resources available. Would they like to remain at home? Do they have a will in place? Where can they find the resources they need? All of these and many more scenarios are addressed in the “Bringing Care Home” guidebook and DVD.

“While planning for aging, illness and end-of-life care may not necessarily be topics that people are eager to discuss, this is an important and critical conversation that families need to have,” said Cathy Grove, RN and director of clinical services.

“Just like that infamous moment when parents have the “birds and the bees” talk with their kids, this is another ‘must have’ conversation on the next stage of life – the talk about what our parents’ wishes – and our wishes – are as they grow older,” added Julie Stewart, community liaison.

November is the perfect time for this campaign, as the holiday season is fast approaching, a time when families gather together and can have this important conversation.

Guardian Home & Community provides care to more than 135 people in local communities. Many healthcare treatments that were once only offered in a hospital can now be safely, effectively, and efficiently provided in people’s homes. Other options are also available to assist seniors with activities of daily living, such as bathing and transportation. Home healthcare is less expensive, more convenient and as effective as care provided in institutional settings.
