Orlando “Bung” Carfley, 98, of Clearfield died Friday, Nov. 2, 2012 at the Clearfield Hospital after a long and courageous battle with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and Waldenstrom’s Macroglobulinemia.
Mr. Carfley was born April 17, 1914 in Curwensville, the son of John and Rufina (Finelli) Carfley. He graduated from Curwensville High School, where he was recognized as an outstanding football player.
He was employed as an electrician at the North American Refractories Co. (NARCO) for many years until he retired at age 65. He was a member of St. Francis Roman Catholic Church in Clearfield
Mr. Carfley enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II and engaged the enemy in the Pacific Theatre in numerous battles while stationed aboard the Destroyer, USS Aaron Ward. He sustained several wounds during one such battle, was transported to a military hospital in New Zealand for treatment, and was awarded the Purple Heart.
Up until his most recent hospitalization, Mr. Carfley remained active as a volunteer for many years at the Clearfield Hospital. He has been recognized for his countless hours of service. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. He enjoyed time spent with his daughters, his grandchildren and his great-grandchildren. He also enjoyed meeting his friends at the Clearfield McDonald’s and also greeting people at the volunteer station in the Clearfield Hospital
In 1941 he wed his sweetheart the former Tillie Rebo and had the good fortune to be together for 65 years until her death in March of 2007. He was also preceded in death by his parents, 10 brothers and sisters and his son-in-law, Dennis Boal
Surviving are his two daughters,Elaine Boalof Clearfield andDarlene McEnaneyand her husband, Kevin of Bartlett, NH; three grandchildren, Brenda Boal and Barbara Winckler and her husband, Larry, all of Indiana andJaime Boalof Conshohocken; two great-grandchildren, Lexi and Brett Winckler of Indiana; his brother, Francis (“Feo”) Carfley of Clearfield; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Mr. Carfley will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Chester C. Chidboy Funeral Home Inc., 16 N. Front St., Clearfield, with Msgr. H. Desmond McGee Jr. officiating. Burial will be in the Hill Crest Cemetery, Clearfield.
Friends will be received from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. Monday and from 9 a.m. until the hour of services Tuesday at the funeral home.
Military honors will be accorded at the graveside by members of the Clearfield Honor Guard.
