WJAC-TV: PSU Students React to New Charges in Child Sex Abuse Case

UNIVERSITY PARK – The eyes of Penn State students were glued to the television Thursday at the HUB, as they watched Pennsylvania Attorney General Linda Kelly announce new charges against former university leaders.

Tim Curley, former athletic director and Gary Schultz, former vice president, were slapped with new charges. Both Curley and Schultz were charged with perjury and related for failure to report sex abuse last year. On Thursday, both men were charged with conspiracy, obstruction and endangering the welfare of children.

Curley and Schultz are expected to be arraigned Friday on these new charges.

Not only were these two men charged, but the Attorney General’s office also announced that charges have been filed against former university President Graham Spanier.

Spanier had been president at Penn State for 16 years until he was removed from his position at the university last November.

“They knew about it. Everybody knows they knew. It’s just coming out now and they’re going to get what they deserve,” said Penn State sophomore Mark Dobil.

Some students said it’s hard to accept that the former administrators turned a blind eye to sex abuse.

“It’s hard. Someone who meant so much to a university and who could have such bad actions and punishments put toward his name. But everything happens for a reason,” said Penn State sophomore Taylor Beatty.

“These people are defining us as Penn Staters according to the media. I’ve never met them. They’ve never taught any of my classes. They really don’t have any effect on my degree personally. It’s just a shame that I have to be affiliated with them for something that they did wrong,” said Penn State senior Karissa Maxwell.
