CLEARFIELD – The Clearfield County Area Agency on Aging Inc., in partnership with the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), is offering area individuals aged 50 and older the opportunity to take the AARP Driver Safety Program course. For the convenience of county residents, original and or refresher courses will be held at four local Centers for Active Living: Clearfield, Karthaus, Kylertown and Mahaffey.
The classroom course was developed by AARP to help drivers remain safe on today’s roads while providing the bonus of a three-year discount on the eligible course graduates’ car insurance.
In honor of veterans, AARP is offering veterans and their families both the original and the refresher courses free during the month of November. However, the class is open to all, with a nominal cost to others: $14 for non-AARP members and $12 for members. Checks are to be made payable to AARP and are to be given to the instructor on the first day of class. Class size is limited and the required registration is taken on a first-come, first-served basis, so early sign-up is suggested.

All automobile insurance companies conducting business in Pennsylvania are required to provide a premium discount to graduates of the Driver Safety Program who are 55 years of age and older. Couples who both have a driver’s license are required to each be certified in the program in order to be eligible for the discount. Anyone completing the original class at least three years prior is eligible to be recertified by taking the refresher course. AARP membership is not a requirement of taking the courses.
