Campus Corner: Morgan, Kalgren Bolster Secondaries; Herrington Boots Game-Winner

CLARION — Redshirt freshman Derek Morgan (Clearfield) started at safety for the second time in three weeks and was involved in five tackles, two of them solo stops, as Slippery Rock (3-4) held Clarion (3-4) to one touchdown through three quarters Saturday to win the Milk Jug Game, 28-20, for the third consecutive year.

Redshirt senior linebacker Nate Sipes (Curwensville) started and assisted on one tackle before being sidelined by a foot injury while freshman center Eric White (Clearfield) once again handled longsnapping duties for Clarion, which tumbled to 1-3 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division with 2,503 looking on at Memorial Field.

With 13 stops the last two weeks, Morgan has moved into the top 10 for tackles with 22 for Slippery Rock, now 2-2 in the PSAC-West.

Sipes, who sat out the previous week’s game because of a foot injury, now is third among Golden Eagle defenders with 39 tackles.

OBERLIN, Ohio — Senior defensive back David Kalgren (Curwensville) recorded four tackles and one assist, broke up one pass and had a six-yard punt return as Oberlin (2-4) snapped a four-game losing streak with its first North Coast Athletic Conference win of the season, 30-6 over Denison (2-4) to the delight of 1,134 fans in Savage Stadium Saturday.

The Yeomen, who limited the visitors to 243 yards, are 1-3 in the NCAC.

For the season, Kalgren has 29 tackles, including 22 solo stops, with four interceptions and five pass break-ups.

He also has 10 punt returns for an 11.4 average and five kickoff runbacks for a 16.0 average.

In the NCAC, Kalgren is second in passes defended with a 1.50 average, tied for the lead in picks and is first in interception return yards (133).

In NCAA Division III, he is tied for second with two interception returns for touchdowns, third in return yards and tied for 10th in interceptions.

CALIFORNIA — Freshman running back Beau Swales (Clearfield) carried four times for six yards in a back-up role for Lock Haven (0-7) in Saturday’s 30-0 loss to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division co-leader California (6-1), ranked No. 15 in NCAA Division II, in front of 4,562 fans at Adamson Stadium.

Redshirt wide receiver Jesse Hoover (Curwensville) and redshirt freshman tackle Kyle Barrett (Curwensville) started for the Bald Eagle offense that netted only three yards for15 rushes and 116 total yards.

The shutout was the fourth for the Bald Eagles, whose losing streak stands at 49, a record for the school, PSAC and NCAA D-II.

Hoover, who has six starts in seven games, is fourth on the team with nine receptions for 105 yards and owns one of the two receiving touchdowns.

Swales has gained 54 yards on 27 carries, caught one pass for two yards and returned two kickoffs for 34 yards.

LARAMIE, Wyo. — Senior placekicker Parker Herrington (Clearfield) booted four extra points, including the game-winner with 7:45 remaining, as Air Force (3-3) eked out a 28-27 Mountain West Conference win over Wyoming (1-5) at War Memorial Stadium Saturday evening.

In disappointing the crowd of 22,627, the Falcons moved to 2-1 in the MWC.

Herrington has converted all 27 PATs this season to extend his streak t0 51 in a row. He has made one field goal in six attempts for a total of 30 points that are the No. 2 total on the team and eight among conference kickers.

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. — Redshirt junior center Nick Redden (Clearfield) and the Duquesne (4-2) offense climbed out of a 17-0 hole to forge a tie in the third quarter, but Central Connecticut State (1-5) bounced back to halt the Dukes’ seven-game Northeast Conference winning streak with a 38-31 upset Saturday.

A partisan crowd of  4,013 was on hand to see the hosts, who never had led in any game this season, keep the Dukes winless in four appearances at Arute Field.

Redden has started every game for Duquesne, which slipped into third place in the NEC at 2-1.

EDINBORO — Freshman running back Alex Holland (Curwensville) made one special teams tackle for No. 22-ranked Indiana University of Pennsylvania (6-1) in a 26-10 win over Edinboro (3-3) in front of 3,245 fans at Sox Harrison Stadium Saturday.

The Crimson Hawks shut out the Fighting Scots over the last 37:44 in the comeback victory that kept them in third place in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division at 3-1. Edinboro fell to 2-2.

Holland had his number called in two early season games and responded with 110 yards for 22 carries. He scored three touchdowns.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

BLOOMSBURG — Junior forward Brooke Mohney (Bigler, Clearfield Area H.S.) has scored two goals, one a game-winner, in 12 games, the last eight as a starter, for Bloomsburg (4-8-1).

She has been credited with four shots and is tied for second on the team with four points.

The Huskies are 2-7-1 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference after losses at California 4-0 on Oct. 9 and at home to Shippensburg 2-1 in overtime Saturday.
