Fall sports updated

Penn State New Kensington’s fall sports teams get into their conference schedules this week as women’s volleyball is home and men’s soccer and men’s and women’s golf are on the road.

The volleyball team begins its 16-game Penn State University Athletic Conference (PSUAC) schedule at home at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21, against Penn State DuBois in the Athletics Center. The New Kensington Lady Lions are 1-5 on the year and coming off a Sept. 13 loss to Carlow College, 3-0. Coach Dave McGeary’s team concludes its two-game home stand at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, when Penn State Greater Allegheny enters the Athletics Center.

The soccer team continues its six-game road swing this weekend with a pair of 1 p.m. PSUAC games in eastern Pennsylvania — Saturday, Sept. 22, at Penn State Wilkes-Barre and Sunday, Sept. 23, at Penn State Schuylkill. Coach Pat Cavanaugh’s squad is coming off a 2-1 victory Sept. 15, at Penn State Worthington Scranton that raised its record to 2-0 in the PSUAC and 2-1 overall. Junior forward Ashutosh Pandey provided the winning margin with two first-half goals and freshman goalie Jimmy Cook turned back five shots to record his second shutout. Pandey leads the team with five goals. The New Kensington Lions return home at 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27 for a nonconference match with Mt. Aloysius College. Due to renovations to the campus soccer field, this year’s home games will be played at Valley High School in New Kensington.

The golf team is back on the Pennsylvania Turnpike as the New Kensington Lions head to Philadelphia for the Brandywine Invitational at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 26, at Edgemont Country Club, located outside the City of Brotherly Love. The team opened its season Sept. 11, with an eighth-place finish at the Mont Alto Invitational at Penn National golf Club in Fayetteville, Pa. Junior Ben Hammel shot an 85 to finish 15th overall in the 54-man field. The match at Penn State Wilkes-Barre on Sept. 18, was canceled due to severe weather.

Campus intercollegiate teams compete in the PSUAC and the United States Collegiate Athletic Association. Post-season tournaments include PSUAC conference championships and USCAA national championships.
