Bike Race to Benefit Habitat for Humanity in Clearfield

CLEARFIELD – The 10th annual King of the Mountain Bike Race, a five-mile, uphill challenge, will be held Sunday, Oct. 14, to benefit the Habitat for Humanity Chapter of Clearfield County.

“We are a totally volunteer organization with virtually no overhead,” said Chapter President John Farr. “And, we average building one home per year for a family in need. So all the money earned will be used to buy building materials.”

The race begins at 12 p.m. from the Lawrence Township Fire Company No. 1, Mill Road, Clearfield. Registration will begin at 11 a.m. at the fire hall.

Riders must report to the registration tables to receive their numbers, starting time and timing chips. All riders must be registered to participate in the race. Pre-registration is $25 and $30 on race day.

Anyone can register for the race, granted they have a road bike, mountain bike, tandem or recumbent and a helmet. Helmets are required for all riders.

Farr said usually about 80 riders participate and about half of those pre-register. Fire police and volunteers will be placed strategically along the route to assist riders.

“Our goal is to promote cycling and to earn a good bunch of money for the Habitat [project],” Farr said. “As a cyclist myself, I like seeing participants return to take on the challenge again. This is our big yearly fundraiser. We raised $12,000 last year, and the monetary success is very gratifying.”

Habitat for Humanity is a Christian ecumenical ministry dedicated to eliminating poverty housing. Net proceeds will be used to buy building materials, according to the Habitat’s King of the Mountain web site.
