UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Penn State men’s gymnastics head coach Randy Jepson announced the addition of Carlos Vazquez to his staff as an assistant coach. Vazquez brings a diverse coaching background, including working with U.S. National Team members and serving as the head coach of the men’s program at Capital Gymnastics.
"I am thrilled to have Carlos Vazquez working with our team," Jepson said. "His experiences as a junior national staff member and as an age group coach of many U.S. National team members give Penn State the most experienced collegiate men’s gymnastics staff in the country. He has a wealth of technical expertise and his enthusiasm, demeanor, and passion for the sport make him a great fit for our program."
"I appreciate the opportunity to work with senior elite athletes," Vazquez said. "Getting the opportunity to coach and put men on the senior National Team has always been a goal of mine and working with Randy and (assistant coach) Slava (Boiko) gives me that opportunity. I have always wanted to be a part of a successful coaching staff, like the one we have here in Penn State."
Vazquez has spent the last 20 years as the head coach of the men’s program at Capital Gymnastics National Training Center in Burke, Va. Additionally, he has served as a U.S. Junior National Team coach since 1992, including serving as an assistant coach for the Junior Pan American Championships in Sao Palo, Brazil in 1992.
Among the gymnasts under Vazquez’s tutelage are 2008 Olympian Justin Spring, U.S. National Team members Jay Nardelli, Jason Furr, Dan Gill, Tim McNeal and Abhinov Ramani. Vazquez has been a member of USA Gymnastics Pro since 1985.
Vazquez was a four-time letterwinner at Temple and served as the team captain from 1982-84. He graduated from Temple with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering.
