Programs Announced for Aug. 31 – Sept. 2 at Parker Dam

The following programs have been scheduled from Aug. 31 through Sept. 2 at the Parker Dam State Park.

Friday, August 31

CCC Trail

6 p.m. – Pavilion 7 parking area

Just reopened this summer, the CCC Trail offers a look into Parker Dam’s past. Attendees will travel to CCC Camp S-73 and talk about what was there, as well as what the boys who lived there did in the park.  Please wear appropriate footwear for a trail.

Full Moon Rising

8:30 p.m. – Beach House steps

You may think that tonight’s full moon is a blue moon.  Find out why it is not a blue moon and other interesting things about the moon.  Learn about the moon’s phases and perhaps a few other objects in the night sky.

Saturday, Sept. 1

Men of A Time Gone By

3 p.m. – Environmental Education Classroom

Many amateur woodhicks will compete this weekend.  Learn about the ‘real deal’ woodhicks who actually worked the woods.  Life wasn’t easy, but they enjoyed what they did for a living, and did it well.

History Walk

5 p.m. – Beach House steps

If you went back 50 years, what might you see at Parker Dam?  How about a hundred years?  Or, five hundred?  Learn about how the area of the park has changed over the years.  Attendees will be walking around the lake and crossing the spillway rocks, so please wear appropriate shoes for the journey.

The CCC Experience

8:30 p.m. – Campground Amphitheater

In 2013, it will be 80 years since the beginning of the Civilian Conservation Corps.  Their legacy lives on in the many conservation projects that we still see today.  Learn more about the CCC, their American Experience, and what the program accomplished across the United States.

Sunday, Sept. 2

29th Annual Woodhick Games 

1 p.m. – 5 p.m.- Woodhick Games Field

Test your traditional Woodhick skills against other amateur woodhicks in five events.  Best score will win you an event; best overall score will give you the coveted title of Woodhick or Woodchick of the Year.  There’s even a junior division for youth 12 years and under. Register (free) at the table in the grove above the Cabin Road so that you can participate in the Woodhick Games.

Woodhick Camp Demonstrations 

1 p.m. -5 p.m.- Woodhick Games Field

You’ll see the camp cooks demonstrate their task of feeding the many hungry woodsmen, and the blacksmith, as he shows his skills with iron and tells his tall tales.  Look also for the historic tools display.

Smokey Bear Is Here! 

1 p.m.- Woodhick Games Field

Smokey Bear will be in the park for a while to greet the competitors, their families, and their fans.  Be sure to go up and say hello, he’s always glad to make new friends.

Woodhick Awards

6 p.m. – Woodhick Games Field

The competitors have given it their all, now it’s time to reward them.  The winners of each event will be awarded their prizes.  Then, we will crown the 2012 Woodhick, Woodchick, Junior Woodhick and Junior Woodchick of the Year.  Bring a lawn chair.
