CLEARFIELD – The second annual Denny’s Beer Barrel Pub burger-eating competition challenged its four entrants to gobble down a two-pound burger in a mere 60 minutes.

The pub averages 115 two-pound burger challenges weekly, and only one in every 100 people eat the entire burger. The pub goes through 77,000 pounds of beef annually.

Once it has its layers of fixings, the two-pound burger weighed in at 4 pounds, 4 ounces. One contestant, Vaughn Metz, of Clearfield surrendered and dropped out of the challenge with approximately 10 minutes left.

The remaining three contestants didn’t finish their burgers. However, Al Royer of Clearfield won the challenge after eating the majority of his burger. He led the challenge from start to finish.

Royer received a $50 prize, an award plaque and T-shirt. After the challenge, he didn’t plan on grilling up burgers or partaking in any fair food.
