Dream Big: Read is drawing to a close at Joseph & Elizabeth Shaw Public Library, but people of all ages still have time to join in on the fun.  Young and the young at heart enjoyed a great week of summer reading programs with youth creating stars to hang outdoors and adults learning the keys to night relaxation with special guest presenter, Tammy Seger. The final week of programs will be held July 23 – 27.

At 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, July 24, Read-to-Me participants are invited to “Capturing Light.”  Children will design a jar to be used to collect lightning bugs.  All children are asked to bring a clean jar with them to the program.

Youth of all ages will learn about the “Wonderful World of Bats” Wednesday, July 25, sponsored by CNB.  The program, which begins at 10:30 a.m., will be presented by bat enthusiast, Jerry Schneider.

Since 2003, Schneider has done presentations about bats in schools and libraries, using wonderful slide photographs taken by Merlin D. Tuttle for Bat Conservation International.  This program introduces audiences to local and tropical bats via slides and taped bat calls.

The audience moves beyond old stereotypes to understand the vital role of bats, which help control pesky insects, pollinate night blooming flowers, and are valuable dispersers of seeds.  Audiences learn about bats in our attics, building bat houses, vampire bats, migration, and hibernation.

A door prize, sponsored by Stanko Construction, will be awarded at the conclusion of the “Wonderful World of Bats” to any youth participant in attendance.

At 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 26, the summer reading program concludes with a craft for School Age A and School Age B participants.  “Buggy Craft” will have youth creating their own lightning bug to display at home.

The Conservatory will be open for youth to redeem all reading and program attendance incentives.  Visit the front desk of the library from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. Monday, July 23 and from 12 p.m. – 3 p.m. Friday, July 27 to receive any earned Planet Bills.  Youth are reminded to bring any Star Coins from recent program attendance for use at the Conservatory.

In addition, the Conservatory will be open during the weeks of July 30 – Aug. 4 and Aug. 6 – 11 during all normal library business hours.  Youth are asked to take advantage of these special Conservatory hours to redeem all incentives before the Dream Big: Read prize drawing on Monday, Aug. 13.

Own the Night summer reading program participants should contact the front desk of the library to register for several great programs coming up.  At “Black Light Tees,” young adult participants are asked to bring a plain black T-shirt with them to the library at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 26. Using special black light paint, young adults can design a T-shirt to be worn under a black light. Those interested in attending should contact the library at 814-765-3271 by 9 p.m. Tuesday, July 24 to register.

Participants of the Own the Night and Between the Book Covers summer reading programs should also visit the library to redeem any earned summer reading incentives.  The final day to log books and minutes is Friday, Aug. 11 and prizes will be drawn Monday, Aug. 13.

Registration for the Dream Big: Read summer reading program will continue through Aug. 11. All registrations are completed online at Shaw Public Library’s web site www.clearfield.org/shaw.

Participants are asked to pick up their registration packets at the front desk of the library upon registering for one of the programs.  Children ages birth through preschool age should enroll in the Read-to-Me program.

Youth who have completed kindergarten through grade 2 are encouraged to participate in the School Age A program and those who have completed grades 3 through 5 will enroll in the School Age B program.

The Own the Night young adult summer reading program is open to anyone who has completed grades 6 through 11 and Between the Book Covers adult summer reading program is available to all adults, including 2012 high school graduates.

The library is open from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays; from 10 a.m. – 9 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays; and from 12 p.m. – 5 p.m. Fridays.  Additional information is available by calling (814) 765-3271 during regular business hours or by visiting the web site at www.clearfield.org/shaw.
