The Ridgway-based state police identified the woman as Savannah Opal Straub, 23, of St. Marys. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
In addition, state police said Brandon Michael Weidow, 24, of Byrnedale sustained moderate injuries. He was initially transported to the Elk Regional Health Center but was later flown to the Altoona Hospital. His condition wasn’t known by state police.
According to the accident report, Straub and Weidow were traveling northbound on SR 255 in a 1991 Mercury Cougar. At some point, state police said the vehicle “went out of control” for an unknown reason.
State police said the vehicle impacted a roadside tree, a guiderail and a bridge retaining wall. Straub was ejected from the vehicle. It wasn’t clear who was operating the vehicle in the police report, and the investigation is ongoing at this time.
