Melvin (Mel) B. Hugney Jr., 44, of Philipsburg died July 3 at his home.  He was born June 24, 1968 in Frenchville, the son of Melvin B. Hugney Sr. and Betsy (Karchner) Hugney.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Virginia Hugney and his maternal grandmother, Gloria Woolridge Karchner.

He is survived by his parents, Melvin Senior of Philipsburg and Betsy Hugney of Clearfield; his maternal grandfather, Richard C. Karchner of Woodland; his half-sister, Pam Acey of Lancaster; his aunt Bobbie Carlson of Falls Church, VA; his uncle Richard and aunt Carole Karchner of Clearfield; his cousin, Matt Karchner of Pittsburgh; and various aunts, uncles and cousins of the Hugney family.

Mel graduated from Clearfield Area High School in 1986 and attended college at Indiana University of Pennsylvania first at Punxsutawney and then at Indiana. He later worked in York as a car transport specialist.

He was in the U.S. Army, completing basic training in 1990 at Fort Campbell, KY and serving in Germany as a “tanker.” He later worked at Hedges Restaurant and Bar in Clearfield.

A public memorial service will be held in his honor at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Bradford Cemetery Chapel with Dr. Duane A. White officiating.
