Clearfield Man Accused of Robbing Fueling Stations Waives Hearings

CLEARFIELD – The man accused of robbing gas stations in Curwensville and Clearfield waived his rights to two preliminary hearings on Wednesday.

Robert L. Runyan of Clearfield is accused of robbing Fuel On in Curwensville Borough. In that case, he faces charges of robbery, two counts of terroristic threats, simple assault and related charges.

According to court records, On June 22, the Curwensville Borough Police Department was called out for an armed robbery. Police were informed by dispatch that a man wearing a gray hooded sweathshirt, a red bandana and sunglasses brandished a black handgun and robbed Fuel On. He was reportedly on foot, fleeing the scene.

Police Dave Johnston canvassed the area while Officer Mark Kelly interviewed the alleged victim. She related that a man came in the store and pulled a gun on her. She told Kelly that he ordered her to put the money in a black bag. Police viewed the surveillance footage, corroborating her statement. Police also viewed the suspect leave a maroon-colored GMC Jimmy. Police also saw at least two other people in the vehicle.

On June 24, Runyan was identified as the suspect by an acquaintance. On June 25, another acquaintance identified Runyon as the suspect.

Runyan was later pegged as a suspect in the robbery of a Kwik Fill on South Second Street in Lawrence Township. According to court records, an MO similar to the Fuel On robbery was used at the Kwik Fill robbery. Police reported the suspect wore a hooded sweatshirt and a mask, brandished a black handgun and ordered the clerk to place the money in a bag. The clerk did so, placing $125 in the bag, and the suspect fled down Rails to Trails.

The Lawrence Township Police Department was familiar with Runyan as a suspect in the Fuel On Robbery, and with similar MO’s, tabbed him as suspect in the Kwik Fill robbery.

Police went to Runyan’s house, where he waived his Miranda rights. He also signed a confession, telling police where he hid the gun and that he hid his vehicle at a nearby car dealership. Police found the gun, as well as the bag.

Runyan is currently in Clearfield County Jail in lieu of $100,000 on both cases.
