Grant to Help Provide Bullet Proof Vests for Sheriff’s, Probation Departments

CLEARFIELD – On Tuesday the Clearfield County Commissioners agreed to apply for a grant on behalf of the Sheriff’s and Domestic Relations offices. The grant will help the offices purchase bullet proof vests.

Community Development Specialist Liza Kovalick informed the commissioners that both departments were in need of bullet proof vests. She stated that a vest has a lifespan of about 5 years.

Each vest will cost $790. Domestics will purchase six vests, while the Sheriff’s Office will purchase eight vests. The grant requires a 50 percent match, and both departments agreed to pay for them out of their budgeted funds. Kovalick indicated the Sheriff’s Office will not budget for it until it’s 2013 budget, but has until 2014. She stated there is a a potential that the full savings on the grant may not be realized if the Sheriff’s Office waits too long.
