Henry J. “Harry” Horsey, 97, of DuBois died Thursday after a long life filled with love and laughter.
He was born Aug. 12, 1914, in Charleston, S.C. to the late Frederick and Florence Poyas Horsey.
He worked as an accountant for Carson Packing Co. in Philadelphia for nearly 40 years, retiring in 1980.
He was a 1933 graduate of West Philadelphia Catholic High School for Boys, and he later studied at Banks Business College and Strayers Business School.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, achieving the rank of master sergeant. He served in an Army finance office before leading a field finance company to various posts around Europe.
A lifelong Catholic, he was a member of St. Michael the Archangel Parish in DuBois. In his retirement, he volunteered with West Jersey Marlton Hospital in Marlton, N.J., and with Meals on Wheels in southern New Jersey and later in DuBois.
He was an avid reader and enjoyed a good, well-plotted mystery. He loved big band music and a rousing game of pinochle, particularly with friends at the DuBois Senior Center. He was quick with a quip and was known for his sharp intellect and generous spirit. He was always a gentleman.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Weber Horsey, whom he married May 14, 1943, and who died July 8, 1987; by three brothers, Albert, Fred and Earl Horsey; and by a sister, Hilda Horsey Hill.
He is survived by his second wife, Alice Carlson Horsey, whom he married March 21, 1998; by two daughters, Dolores Horsey Van Steenacker and her husband, Harry, of Palmyra, N.J., and Donna Horsey Bowers and her husband, Melvin, of DuBois; by four step-children, Douglas Minns, of Troutville, Gregory Minns and his wife, Kerstin, of Gordonsville, Va., Sandy Minns Donahue and her husband, Terry, of Sykesville, and Patsy Minns Flanders and her husband, David, of DuBois; by five grandchildren, Jeanine Van Steenacker Carey, of Maple Shade, N.J., Ronald Van Steenacker and his wife, Regina, of Mechanicsburg, Michelle Van Steenacker, of Middlesex, N.J., Megan Bowers, of Stow, Ohio, and Kristin Bowers, of Erie; by six great-grandchildren; and by numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends may call from 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. Sunday at Goble-Baronick Funeral Home in DuBois. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Michael the Archangel Parish, celebrated by the Rev. David Foradori.
