Parker Dam Program Notes: June 1 Through June 3

Start the Weekend’ Already Hike:  10:00 a.m.- Beach House

A “Get Outdoors PA” Program

If you are able to get your weekend started just a little early, then why not take a hike at the park to unwind from the week.  We will discuss anything interesting we might come across, but the goal will be a relaxing hike.  The hike will be about 2 miles or less, but wear shoes appropriate for hiking and bring along some water if you wish.

Little Creatures…:  8:30 p.m.- Campground Amphitheater

There may be as many as hundreds of trillions of ants on Earth; some even say that they outnumber humans one million to one!  Like us, these tiny but resilient insects shape the world around them, and their tenacity can inspire both awe and fear.  Come learn more about these amazing creatures.

 Saturday, June 2

Timber Rattlesnake:  8:30 p.m.- Campground Amphitheater

Do you really know the truth about these reptiles with such a bad reputation?  Chances are, some of what you think you know, isn’t really true.  Learn how they survive in their habitat and why the poor reputation of timber rattlesnakes is so unfounded.  They are amazing creatures with many special adaptations; and the more you understand them, whether you like them or not, the more you will see how valuable they are to their ecosystem.

Sunday, June 3

Black Bears on the Beach:  1:00 p.m.- Beach House steps

Seeing a black bear can inspire awe, or fear.  But when you understand the way that they survive in Penn’s Woods, you’ll most likely fall into the category of awe.  Learn more about black bears as park staff bring them up close to you at the beach.

History Walk:  2:00 p.m.- Beach House steps

A “Get Outdoors PA” Program

If you went back 50 years, what might you see?  Would Parker Dam be any different?  How about a hundred years?  Or, five hundred?  Learn more about how the area of the park has changed over the years.  We will be walking around the lake and crossing the spillway rocks, so please wear appropriate shoes for the journey.

NOTE:  Lou and Helen Adams CCC Museum:  Open Saturday and Sunday, 1:00-4:00 p.m.
