Golden Tide Finish Strong, Crush Brockway 13-2

BROCKWAY – The Curwensville Golden Tide baseball team finished the 2012 campaign on a high note Saturday, downing Brockway 13-2 in a game called after five innings were played due to the ten run rule.

Curwensville beat Brockway the first time the two teams played, on April 13, 8-7 in Curwensville.

It wouldn’t be a close game this time however as the Tide collared the Rovers with an eight run second inning that would doom their hosts for the 1:30 pm afternoon affair in Brockway.

The highlight of the second inning outburst for Curwensville was a two out grand slam home run by left fielder Brad Coudriet. On the day the Tide junior drove in five runs.

Curwensville picked up three more tallies in the top half of the third inning, and after three frames were in the books it had a commanding 12-2 lead.

Boone McGary had a big day at the plate for the Golden Tide as well with two hits and three RBI’s.  McGary had an RBI in the second, fourth and fifth innings.

Adding two hits each for the Tide were senior Alex Holland and junior Jordan Russell while catcher Kyle Bloom, a junior, had a two run single to right field in the big second inning.

Johns talked about two big hits for his team afterwards, “Kyle Bloom’s two run single got us going in the second and Brad’s (Coudriet) grand slam with two outs was a real back breaker for Brockway.”

Sophomore pitcher Kyle Johns went the distance and evened his record at 4-4 with a strong two hit, eight strikeout performance for Curwensville.

About the effort of his sophomore hurler Johns said, “Kyle (Johns) had his most effective start of the year, with the exception of the second inning where he really lost his focus, he was really tough today.”

Curwensville had seven stolen bases, three by Tanner Elensky, and Johns spoke of that aspect of the game, “We were very effective utilizing our overall team speed today to create several scoring opportunities for ourselves.”

The Golden Tide started the season going 0-5, then won seven of the remaining fourteen games to finish strong at 7-12.

Johns summed up the 2012 season, his third at the helm, this way, “The 0-5 start was certainly not the hole we were intending to put ourselves in right out of the gate this year. To come back and play .500 baseball over the final fourteen games makes me very proud of the way the guys hung together and bounced back the second half of the year.  The five seniors we lose have certainly made huge contributions to baseball in Curwensville for the past four years and will be sorely missed.”

The five seniors that Curwensville loses from this year’s team are Alex Holland, Alex Holt, Boone McGary, Todd Munchak and Jesse Zorger.

About next year Johns was optimistic, “We’re excited about the 2013 campaign. We gained a lot of experience for a lot of underclassmen this season and we’re optimistic this will translate into even more success for our baseball program next spring.

“I also would like to thank my coaching staff”, Johns added, “Ryan Bilger, Adam McGary and Tom Harzinski for the time they and their families sacrificed in order to assist me this season.”
