BROOKVILLE – In what turned out to be a classic high school baseball game, Brookville pushed a run across in the bottom of the tenth inning to edge Curwensville, 3-2, Thursday afternoon in Brookville.
It was the second win of the year for the Raiders over the Golden Tide, who defeated Curwensville 12-2, back on April 2. This time the win would be much more difficult.
The Raiders scored the games first run in the bottom of the first inning, with the Tide tying the game at 1-1 by scoring in the top of the third.
In the top of the third inning Curwensville picked up it’s first run of the afternoon when Jake Stiles singled to right center field that scored Boone McGary who had reached base earlier on a fielder’s choice.
Once again the Tide hit the road for their next encounter, on Monday, at Brockway, in a game that starts at 4:15 pm. Curwensville edged the Rovers the first time around, on April 13, 8-7.
Brookville would regain the lead with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning but the Tide would quickly knot the game at 2-2 in the top half of the sixth frame.
Pinch hitter Curt Bloom got things started for Curwensville in it’s half of the sixth with a lead off double to left center field.
Alex Holt, pinch running for Bloom, stole third base and then crossed home plate on a one out double by Jordan Russell to right field.
In the bottom of the tenth Brookville scored the winning run without a hit as they had a hit batter, a walk and a Tide error to bring home the game winning run.
The two teams stranded a total of 29 base runners. Curwensville left 14 on base while the Raiders stranded 15. Three of the runners left on base by the Tide came in the top of the fourth inning when they left the bases loaded.
Curwensville out hit Brookville with ten hits to five, but the Tide walked nine Raiders and hit three.
Afterwards Tide head coach Denny Johns spoke about the effort of a couple of his players, “Brett (Gardner) did just an outstanding job holding a good Brookville team to just 2 runs through eight innings. And Curt (Bloom) really ignited us with his pinch hit double in the sixth inning to get our second run of the game.”
About the game, Johns commented, “You are never satisfied when you lose a ballgame, but that definitely was our best game of the year. Offensively we hit the ball very well but just couldn’t come up with the big hit.”
Curwensville, now 5-11 on the 2012 campaign, travel Monday to Brockway to play the Rovers at 4:15 pm. The Tide defeated the Rovers earlier this season (April 13) at Curwensville, 8-7.
