Clearfield Woman Waives Hearing in DUI/Aggravated Assault by Vehicle Case

CLEARFIELD – A Clearfield woman accused of driving drunk and striking two other vehicle waived her right to a preliminary hearing on Wednesday.

Valerie Shaw faces charges of DUI, aggravated assault by vehicle and related charges.

According to court records, state troopers were called to the scene of a three-vehicle accident in Curwensville Borough Dec. 14, 2011.

Shaw was reportedly was traveling east; vehicles driven by Ronald Canaway and Alycia Aughenbaugh, both of Curwensville, were traveling west. Witnesses and alleged victims said Shaw appeared to cross over the center line and struck both vehicles head-on.

Shaw suffered moderate injuries. A passenger in Ronald Canaway’s vehicle, Gail E. Canawa, suffered moderate injuries. Alycia Aughenbaugh also suffered moderate injuries. All three were flown to Altooan Regional for treatment.

Ronald Canaway suffered moderate injuries. David K. Snyder of DuBois, a passenger in Aughenbaugh’s vehicle, suffered minor injuries. They were taken to Clearfield Hospital for treatment.

Police spoke with Shaw later that day. She reportedly told them she had no idea what happened and that she had been drinking vodka and orange juice at work earlier. She said she was traveling from work to her home when the incident occurred. She was arrested for DUI and consented to a blood draw.

On Dec. 201, 2011, state police reviewed the results; Shaw’s BAC was reported at .25 percent. The legal limit in Pennsylvania is .08 percent.

Investigators talked to her by phone on Dec. 27, 2011. It is reported that she told them all she could remember from the incident was that her purse fell on the floor and she reached down to pick it up. She then told police she didn’t remember anything else.

Shaw is free on unsecured bail.
