Golden Tide Take Care Of Kane, 8-4

CURWENSVILLE – The Curwensville Golden Tide baseball team won for the third time in its last four games by beating visiting Kane Monday afternoon, 8-4, under grey, threatening skies.

Curwensville had just defeated the Wolves last Monday, in Kane, by a score of 14-3.

Head coach Denny Johns, of Curwensville, was glad to get the game in and pick up the victory, “It was a good win for us. We got off to a nice start thanks to a couple of clutch hits early on. But I thought we might put the game away in the fifth and sixth innings, but I think we relaxed a bit.”

The Tide took a 3-0 first inning lead, a lead they would never give up, when Tanner Elensky started it for Curwensville with a lead off double followed by singles from Kyle Bloom, Boone McGary and Kyle Johns.

McGary’s single brought in two runs, as the senior picked up a total of four RBI’s on the afternoon, and also closed out the game on the mound to preserve the win.

Alex Holland scored in the bottom of the second inning with a single and stolen base, and then scored on a two out single by Bloom, making the score 4-0 in favor of Curwensville.

On the day, sophomore catcher Bloom would have three hits and throw out four base runners. Three were nailed trying to get to third base and one trying to steal second.

Curwensville added one run in the third, two in the fourth and one in the sixth.

Kane, 1-11, didn’t go away quietly though as the Wolves scored three in the sixth and one in the seventh to add some pressure to the Curwensville win.

Elensky and Johns, both sophomores, each had two hits for the Golden Tide.

Loren Kuhmer and Dan Park paced the Wolves offense with two hits each with each getting a double.

Johns got the win for Curwensville and improved to 3-3 on the season while McGary turned out to be an effective closer.

The Curwensville pitchers struck out a total of 11 batters, six for Johns and five for McGary.

Coach Johns followed with, “Kyle Bloom had an outstanding day for us both at the plate and behind the plate. I thought Kyle (Johns) threw well overall. He just needs to be more efficient with his pitches. He sometimes goes to deep in the count and needs to make it easier for himself in that respect.”

Curwensville, now 5-9, will entertain the Black Knights of Moshannon Valley on Tuesday with the first pitch set for 4:15 pm.

The Tide and Knights were rained out on Friday of last week.
