TYRONE — The Clearfield boys and girls track teams both picked up wins on Tuesday afternoon as they bested Central at Tyrone High School by 93-53 and 108-38 respectively.
The wins up the Bison records to 3-4 for the boys and 5-2 for the girls.
Beau Swales led the boys squad by winning the 100 meter and 200 meter sprints, and anchored the winning 4×100 relay.
On the girl’s side Jessica Shomo and Rachel Thompson each picked up four wins. Shomo in the long and triple jumps, the 100 meter dash, and the 4×100 relay. Thompson in the javelin and discus, and both the 4×100 and 4×400 relays.
Understandably, it was easy for Bison head coach John Jacob to hand out some individual accolades. About Swales he noted, “His focus today was outstanding, and the times he ran were a reflection of how hard he has been working all year.” Jacob continued, “Not to be outdone, Alec Freeman lowered his times in both the 1600 and 3200 meter runs and anchored the 4×800 relay. Dylan Graham continues to improve each meet. It is nice to have such a versatile athlete that is willing to sacrifice individual gain for the good of the entire team”
The key to victories this year have been the depth of the teams, the relay teams in particular. A number of newcomers for the boys ( Jon Soult, Jon Sponsler, Grant Climie, Hunter Keith, Casey Wilsoncroft) and girls (Alayna Null, Emily Aveni, Janessa Riddell, Sara Lash) have been able to stay competitive and pick up points with their second and third place finishes.
Coach Jacob added, “Two girls that deserve alot of recognition are Curwensville runners Sierra Strickland and Becca Johnson. Becca won the 1600 meter in 5:51 and 800 meter run in 2:34 against Tyrone, Central, and Clearfield. Both times qualified her for the District 9 AA Track & Field Championships. Sierra won the 400 meter dash in 1:07 to win that event. These girls have been practicing with us all season and have helped make us a stronger team.”
Clearfield will head to the Bald Eagle Invite on Friday.
