CLEARFIELD – Whether you are a job seeker looking for resources to land a new job, a parent looking for free activities for children or a student searching for your next favorite book, you belong at your library.

First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country each April.

Today’s libraries help level the playing field by making both print and digital information affordable, available and accessible to all people.  Libraries provide cultural heritage and genealogical collections, materials in print and electronic formats, job seeking resources, bestselling novels and non-fiction, and many creative and resourceful programs.

Libraries have historically served as our nation’s great equalizers of knowledge. The strength of libraries has always been the diversity of their collections and commitment to serving all people. This National Library Week, join the Joseph & Elizabeth Shaw Public Library, its Director and staff, and the Board of Trustees and celebrate the place where we all belong:  the Shaw Public Library.

The Shaw Public Library is celebrating National Library Week by inviting the community to stop by the library to learn about all the wonderful programs and exceptional services we offer our service area.

As part of National Library Week celebration, the Friends of the Shaw Public Library will kick off their annual fundraising campaign.  The Friends of the Shaw Public Library, the Director, and Board of Trustees of the Shaw Public Library would like to thank the community for their past and future support.  “The 2011 campaign was very successful and we are hopeful for another great year in 2012,” stated Paula Collins, library director. Anyone that would like to contribute to the Friends drive and does not receive a fundraising letter in the mail is more than welcome to make a contribution and request to be added for future fundraising campaigns.

Youth in grades K through 5 are invited to the Library throughout the week to learn all the great things happening at their local public library.  Throughout the week any school aged youth that checkout a book may have their name submitted for a prize drawing. Youth that check out a poetry book in observation of April as National Poetry Month will be given two entries for the drawing. The prize drawing will take place on Monday, April 16th and the winner will be notified by phone.

On April 9, the library will be honoring the young adults that entered their“Picture This” photography contest.  Also, the photography is on display for the public to view during our National Library Week celebration.

Clearfield Area Kiwanis is partnering with the Library for the 2012 Pennsylvania One Book program, Stop Snoring, Bernard!, a children’s book written and illustrated by Zachariah OHora, on Tuesday, April 10th at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. According to the Pennsylvania One Book, Every Young Child website, the One Book initiative is in its seventh year highlighting the importance of early literacy development and the role of books, reading, and libraries in child development. Space is limited and registration is available by calling the library or by stopping in during regular business hours.

“Today’s libraries provide a wide range of opportunities for people with diverse needs and interests,” stated Collins. “That means providing the community with collections and services for people of diverse backgrounds and skills.”
