BELLEFONRT – According to WJACTV.com, Jerry Sandusky’s trial on alleged child sex abuse crimes has been delayed until June 5, a judge ruled Thursday afternoon. The trial was previously scheduled to begin May 15.
Sandusky, a former Penn State assistant football coach, faces 52 criminal charges he sexually abused 10 boys over a 15-year period, allegations he denies.
His defense attorney, Joe Amendola, filed a motion in February saying he needs more time to contact and interview witnesses, subpoena records and hire experts.
6 News has learned that both sides in the Sandusky case along with the presiding judge held a conference call Thursday morning and that’s when Judge John Cleland agreed to move the trial date from May 14 to June 5.
Sandusky’s attorney says more time in needed to prepare and support his argument. He points to last Saturday’s report on NBC News on alleged Victim 6 in a 1998 incident, that NBC received more information than the Sandusky legal team.
“One of the good things that came out of the Saturday morning report on NBC that it’s clear that the Penn State police report was comprised of many more pages and many more materials than what we received from the commonwealth”, said Amendola. “We received somewhere in the area of 18 pages of documents, we now know there were 90 pages.”
Joe Amendola tells 6 News while he appreciates more time to prepare he will still ask for another delay in starting the trial during a pre-trial hearing set for next week.
