Sigel Woman gets Jail Time for Stealing from Employer

CLEARFIELD-A woman accused of stealing over $8,000 from her employer pleaded guilty Tuesday during plea and sentencing court in Clearfield County.

Jessica E. Beres, 24, Sigel, pleaded guilty to a felony charge of theft by unlawful taking. She was sentenced to 90 days to one year in jail and two years consecutive probation. She was fined $300 plus costs and must pay restitution of $8,100.

According to the affidavit of probable cause, in April 2011 police began an investigation into losses at a grocery store in DuBois. A loss prevention manager for the business told police the store had lost over $20,000 to theft since its opening in 2010. A service desk cashier, Beres, was caught on a video surveillance system processing false refunds. She was scanning store merchandise as if the items were being returned and was keeping the cash.

When Beres was interviewed she admitted to doing the false refunds, taking money from the cash drawer and safe, as well as taking food. She stated that she stole approximately $8,100 in cash and merchandise between Oct. 2010 and March 2011.
