CLEARFIELD – Local filmmaker and Clearfield native, Eric Koval, is co-producing a documentary exploring the history of preservation and commercialization as it applies to Gettysburg. Koval has teamed up with fellow filmmaker Matt Callery (Parsippany, N.J.) to release the documentary in July 2013, just in time for the 150th Anniversary of the battle of Gettysburg.

“Addressing Gettysburg: 150 Years of Tours and Tribulations,” is a view into the overlooked facet of the history of Gettysburg – the tourism industry. “We are exploring how throughout history, Gettysburg has struggled with striking a balance between being good custodians of our past, and catering to the needs and wants of the visiting public,” said Koval. “In essence, the two must co-exist.”

Currently in the planning stages of production, Callery and Koval  have enlisted Patrick Gorman, who played “Major General John Bell Hood” in the Ted Turner classics “Gettysburg” and “Gods and Generals,” to narrate the film, and  “Fight As Long As Possible”author Eric Lindblade. Combining expert interviews, first-hand perspective from Gettysburg natives, as well as man-on-the-street conversations with tourists, the duo seeks to create an entertaining, educational and enlightening documentary showing both sides of the story.

Koval, born and raised in Clearfield, Pa., has been an upcoming videographer/producer for quite some time. Aspiring to turn a hobby into a career, Koval possess a degree in video production, and has worked on both independent projects, as well as pieces that have been featured on Gordon Ramsay’s “Hotel Hell,” Food Network Canada’s “Glutton for Punishment,” and Bloomberg Television’s “The Mentor.” He currently owns SEK Media, residing in Clearfield with is 1-year-old daughter.

“The Civil War and city of Gettysburg have always been of great interest to me and my family,” said Koval. “This film isn’t about showcasing the historic battle that occurred nearly 150 years ago, but to look at the reoccurring issue as we try and preserve our past, yet allow our future to have a chance.”
