Obituary Notice: Howard G. Moyer

Mr. Howard G. Moyer, 87, of Houtzdale, passed away Sunday, March 11, 2012, at 4:20am at the DuBois Regional Medical Center.

Howard was born at Clearfield, PA, on Oct. 29, 1924, a son of the late Lawrence E. and Mildred V. (Cramer) Moyer.

He attended and graduated from the Clearfield High School.

Howard was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He served in WW II with Company B 474th Infantry in Central Europe and Northern Africa. He was part of Darby’s Rangers and was awarded a Silver Star Medal and a Purple Heart Medal.

On July 6, 1951, in Winchester, VA, Howard married Leta Mae “Lee” Heitsenrether Moyer. Lee preceded Howard in death on Dec. 18, 2011.

In April of 1970, Howard and Lee founded Howard’s Riverside of Houtzdale which later became Howard’s BiLo. They retired in the late 80’s.

Howard started working in the grocery business at the age of 16 for the former C.C. Sandy and Sons grocery store of Clearfield. He delivered milk for the Miller Dairy and later became district manager of Weis Market for 16 years, covering 12 stores. He also was an assistant manager of the Riverside Market in Clearfield for 1.5 years.

Howard is survived by three daughters and two sons: Christine Ann Townsend and her husband Gary of Sanborn, NY, Coreen Lee Froman and her husband Bruce Pierce of Sanborn, NY,
Sylvia Jean Bumbarger and her husband John of Houtzdale, William H. Moyer and his wife Pamela of Houtzdale, and Robert D. Moyer and his wife Michelle of Houtzdale.

He is survived by nine grandchildren, Leah Stuart, Rodney Fetters, Danielle Hoover, Matthew Froman, Kelly O’Donnell, Chad Moyer, Shannon Moyer, Dustin Moyer, and Chessa Moyer. Six great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews also survive.

Howard is survived by two sisters: Dorothy Young of Altoona, and Mary Olosky and her husband James of Curwensville.

In addition to his parents and wife, Howard was preceded in death by the following siblings: Ronald Moyer, James Moyer, Kathryn Moyer, Marjory VanScoyc, Robert Moyer, Lawrence Moyer, Betty Flanagan, and Helen Strunk.

Howard was a parishioner of the First United Methodist Church of Houzdale where funeral services will be held on Wednesday, March 14 at 11:00 AM with Rev. Robert Ford officiating. Interment will follow in the Beulah Cemetery, Ramey. The Osceola Mills Honor Guard will accord military honors at graveside.
