Golden Tide Stopped By DuBois Central Catholic 65-41

DUBOIS – A very young Curwensville Golden Tide boys basketball team has shown steady improvement over the course of the 2011-12 season even though they have just one victory.

Monday night, despite losing to the DuBois Central Catholic (DCC) Cardinals 65-41, they showed even more improvement considering the first time around DCC walloped the Golden Tide 72-26.

Curwensville coach Shane Pentz, whose team is now 1-12 on the year, was still upbeat afterwards, “We are playing teams better, especially the second time around. We just can’t seem to pick up a win.”

Pentz continued, “We are becoming more aggressive on offense, so the guys are starting to come around in that aspect of the game. Tonight, though, on defense we didn’t rotate well in the first half out of our zone so that gave them (DCC) some easy buckets at times.”

The Cardinals started out fast and continued to add to the lead throughout most of the game taking a 10 point first period lead 23-13 on a three-pointer by Mike Krajewski near the buzzer.

A very bright spot for the Tide was sophomore Tanner Elensky scoring 10 first quarter points that included two from beyond the arc. Elensky paced the Tide offense with 17.

The second and third periods weren’t kind to the Golden Tide as they put up only six points in each, and after three periods were in the scorebook the visitors from Curwensville found themselves on the short end of the scoreboard, trailing 50-25 going into the final eight minutes.

Curwensville did outscore the Cardinals in the fourth frame 16-15 to gain a measure of satisfaction.

Jake Heigel of DCC led all scores with 22 on the night and, like Elensky,  canned 10 first quarter points.

Krajewski, off of the bench , added 11 for the Cardinals who tasted victory for only the fourth time this season against 11 defeats.

With several games left Pentz feels his squad can still achieve some success, “If we can ever put four strong quarters together and the kids stay with it like they have been, then we could pick up a few more wins before the end of the year.“

DuBois Central Catholic made a clean sweep of the evening’s contests by winning the junior varsity battle over the Golden Tide 53-22.

Curwensville will be at home on Wednesday when they play the Vikings of Glendale with JV action starting at 6 pm and the varsity to immediately follow.

In their first meeting the Vikings beat Curwensville 62-29 at Glendale.
