Lady Vikings Sail Past Lady Tide 50-32

FLINTON – Glendale built a 44-18 cushion through three quarters and completed a sweep of Curwensville with a 50-32 win Wednesday night to keep alive its hopes of repeating as Moshannon Valley League champion.

The visiting Lady Tide trailed by 10 points at intermission before the Lady Vikings broke it open behind Kelli McGarvey’s 10 points in the third quarter.

Glendale’s top scorer, who finished with 13 points, had only one free throw in the first half when she picked up three fouls and had to sit out about four minutes of the second period, according to Curwensville coach Rusty McCracken.

“Katrina Seaburn did a good job on her in the first half,” he said. “We easily could have made the game a little different if we had made our layups after breaking their press. We just weren‘t able to finish things off.”

Caitlin Kimberly picked up the slack for the Lady Vikings with 12 of her game-high 14 points in the first 16 minutes.

Then, Glendale (7-8) outscored Curwensville 18-2 in the third period.

“You’ve got to give them credit,” McCracken said. “We came out with the basketball first and failed to get anything started.

“Glendale went to a half-court trap on the ball as soon as we crossed the line. They double-teamed, and we just didn’t react real well to it.”

“And McGarvey took over.”

Seaburn’s two free throws were the Lady Tide’s only points in the quarter.

Ciara Strickland led Curwensville (4-9) with 10 points, all but two coming in the fourth period.

The Lady Tide fell to 2-3 in the MVL, while the Lady Vikings improved to 5-1 and set up a showdown with front-running West Branch Thursday.

Curwensville returns to action Friday at Brockway.

Glendale won the junior varsity game, 45-20. Tiffany Carter scored half of the Lady Tide points.
