Lady Bisons Win Third Straight with 57-45 Victory over DuBois

DUBOIS – The Clearfield Area High School girls basketball team kept it’s winning streak churning forward as the Lady Bisons ventured to DuBois Thursday and came home with a 57-45 victory over the Lady Beavers.

With their third straight win Clearfield improved to 7-3 on the 2011-12 season while the Lady Beavers dropped to 3-8.

The Lady Bisons jumped out to a 10-0 first quarter lead before DuBois mounted a rally that had them outscore their visitors 11-2 over the final minutes of the first frame to trail by only one 12-11 going into the second eight minutes.

And it was the second eight minutes that propelled the Lady Bisons to a 10 point intermission lead at 31-21 as Clearfield head coach Joey Castagnolo noted, “Near the end of the second quarter we really took over the game with a good run to go into halftime up by 10.”

DuBois would keep the game close at times in the third quarter as Lady Beaver junior Casey Wilcox poured in eight points to close the Lady Bison margin to 42-35 at the end of three.

At one time in the third quarter Clearfield had a 38-25 lead when reserve Katie Sheeder hit for two; only to see the Lady Beavers answer with a 10-4 run to close out the next to last period.

Castagnolo had some praise for both squads, “They (DuBois) were really up for this game, and we expected that. But we also played well with our typical workmen’s like game. I thought we passed the ball very well tonight and even when it got close we never panicked.”

Both teams would fight hard in the fourth quarter to gain the edge with DuBois never being able to cut into the Clearfield margin. In fact the Lady Bisons had it’s biggest lead at 55-39 with two minutes to go thanks to a bucket by junior Breanna Peters.

Peters paced the Clearfield team with 14 followed by Dakota Farmery and Rachel Thompson who each scored 12. Lisa Ambuski, thanks to two three pointers, chipped in with nine.

For DuBois it was Wilcox paving the way with 14 points on the night, all coming in the second half, and Katelyn LaBue who also scored 14.

The road doesn’t get any easier for the Lady Bisons as mentioned by Castagnolo, “We do have a lot of tough games ahead of us so it won’t be easy. But I thought tonight we showed great senior leadership and played unselfish ball which we need to carry over for the long haul.”

The Lady Bison junior varsity squad also picked up a win by beating the Lady Beavers 25-15 in the first game to even it’s record to 5-5 under coach Jerry Stewart.

Clearfield will make the journey to Penns Valley on Saturday for their next outing. The game was originally scheduled for Friday. Junior varsity action begins at 4:30 pm and the varsity contest will immediately follow.
