Lady Tide Crunch Harmony For Second Win 56-18

CURWENSVILLE – The Curwensville Lady Tide basketball squad picked up it’s second victory of the year, and the first in 2012, with a convincing 56-18 win over the visiting Lady Owls of Harmony Monday night at Patton Hall in Curwensville.

“Obviously it was a game that we expected to win and certainly one we needed to help develop some confidence,” said Lady Tide head coach Rusty McCracken afterwards.

Curwensville, now 2-6 on the year, jumped out to a quick 8-0 lead before Harmony head coach Ralph Butterworth inserted his only five bench players into the game replacing his starting five.

The move worked somewhat for the Lady Owls as they did find some offense, if not much, scoring four first quarter points. Unfortunately five Tide players scored a total of 16 to get Curwensville off and running.

Not letting up, the Lady Tide outscored Harmony in the second stanza 12-5 to take a very comfortable 28-9 margin into the intermission.

McCracken noted why his squad did well, “The girls really responded tonight and made the shots that we needed to make. We finally finished with buckets on the fast break several times, which was really good to see.”

The confidence gained by Curwensville really carried over to start the second sixteen minutes of action as the Lady Tide won the third quarter 20-6 to march into the final eight minutes with a commanding bulge at 48-15.

It was 36-9 with 5:05 remaining in the third period before the Lady Owls got a bucket from freshman Joleen Brink, which stopped an 8-0 run by Curwensville.

Harmony, which dropped to 0-10 on the 2011-12 campaign, had only two points scored by it’s starting lineup.

The Lady Owls were led by Brink with seven and Lindsay Welteroth with five.

Curwensville had it’s best overall team scoring effort on the season as three Lady Tide hit for double figures with junior Rebecca Johnson scoring 14 and Ciara Strickland and Katrina Seaburn each chipping in with 12.

In all nine of the 13 Lady Tide players tallied points in the game with the bench adding 10.

McCracken was pleased to get his bench some minutes, “It was good for the bench to get in the game and gain some experience and be productive tonight.”

In the junior varsity game Curwensville completed the sweep with a 43-16 victory over the Lady Owls youngsters.

Curwensville is home again Tuesday when it hosts the Ramettes of Johnsonburg. The JV game will start at 6 pm and the varsity will immediately follow.

In closing McCracken said, “Hopefully we can build off of this game and carry some of that confidence we gained tonight to carry over to the Johnsonburg contest tomorrow (Tuesday) night.”
